Gilead Watch: Protect women’s rights from pronatal politicians<\/h1><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In November 2021, we released Welcome to Gilead, an original report<\/a> that exposes how politicians across the world are justifying the restriction of women’s reproductive rights because of fears of population decline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report identifies a toxic mix of nationalism, economic anxiety, sexism, racism and contempt for human rights which can combine to drive measures such as abortion bans, restrictions on contraception access and political pressure on women to have more children. Through Gilead Watch, we provide updates on relevant developments, including the ways in which governments are using overt or hidden coercive methods to advance their pronatal and discriminatory agendas. Belarus has one of the world’s lowest fertility rates, combined with high levels of emigration. Its population is shrinking. It has employed pronatal policies such as financial support to people with larger families for many years, with its president stating in 2014 “Two children is a must. And having three, four children should be encouraged.” Doctors are able to refuse providing abortion<\/a> on grounds of conscience. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
