With his tweets and comments showing no sign of diminishing or becoming more reasonable, PM has published a new report analysing his claims, <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/resources\/which-planet-he-elon-musk-and-population-apocalypse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Which planet is he on? Elon Musk and the population apocalypse<\/a>. To bring home the message, we have also sent a uniquely-designed Fake News award to Mr Musk, care of Tesla\u2019s HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Report author, Head of Campaigns Alistair Currie, trawls through the words of wisdom.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just this week, Mr Musk has again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/news\/22\/08\/28429203\/elon-musk-uses-adult-baby-diapers-to-sound-alarm-over-coming-population-collapse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repeated his claim<\/a> that population collapse is the \u201cgreatest threat to civilisation\u201d. Having spent longer than I would ever choose to on his Twitter feed in recent months, it was little surprise to see him continuing to beat that drum. Following reports in July that he was the father of previously unknown twins, taking his personal tally to nine living children, Mr Musk went on Twitter to say he was \u201cdoing my best to help the underpopulation crisis\u201d, securing 240,000 likes from his ardent followers. Just days later, the UN released its latest <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2022\/07\/too-fast-too-slow-just-right-uns-2022-population-projections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">population projections<\/a>, which estimate that 2.4 billion more people will be added to the global population by 2086, with a total of 8 billion to be hit this November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the report, we set out to examine specific comments by Mr Musk, and test them against the evidence and expert opinion. We found plenty of material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"728\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/PROJECTIONS-95-hi-lo-rec_0.png\" alt=\"UN Population Projections\" class=\"wp-image-1944\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/PROJECTIONS-95-hi-lo-rec_0.png 1024w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/PROJECTIONS-95-hi-lo-rec_0-300x213.png 300w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/PROJECTIONS-95-hi-lo-rec_0-768x546.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">UN Population Projections<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe world\u2019s population is accelerating towards collapse.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/882939670895755264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">July 2017<\/a>) \u201cThe biggest issue the world will face in 20 years is population collapse.\u201d (2019 &#8211; but retweeted as recently as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1529193812949614594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 2022<\/a>) In fact, human population is currently growing and no authoritative, expert projection foresees it peaking before 2050. The 2022 UN projection does not foresee any significant downward trend in population for at least 80 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf these trends continue, humanity will cease to exist.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1537442531008339968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June 2022<\/a>) \u201cUnless something changes \u2026 Japan will eventually cease to exist. This would be a great loss for the world.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1523045544536723456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 2022<\/a>) Should we be concerned about hitting zero population, both globally and in some major countries? Well, even the lowest ranges of the main authoritative population projections do not foresee global population being lower at the end of this century than it was at the start, at about 6bn people. Higher range projections see it still continuing to grow at the end of the century. By 2100, there will still be fewer people over 70 than under 20 globally (18% to 22%). Half our global human population is under 30 today. Ageing does represent a substantial economic challenge in some countries but there are many positive policy solutions already being deployed to <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2021\/10\/pm-report-exposes-ageing-myth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">address it<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe common rebuttal is \u2018what about immigration?\u2019. I\u2019m like, from where?\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1529193812949614594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 2022<\/a>) Mr Musk has dismissed immigration as a solution to low birth rates in certain countries because of low birth rates \u201ceverywhere\u201d. Many parts of the world will be growing their populations over the coming century. According to UN projections, Africa alone is projected by the UN to add more than two billion people to the global population by 2100, and still be growing. In 2022, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change identified population growth as one of the two \u201cstrongest drivers\u201d of carbon emissions from fossil fuel combustion, and in 2018, identified future high population growth as a \u201ckey impediment\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/resources\/the-climate-crisis-why-population-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keeping global warming under 1.5\u00b0C<\/a>. The Global Footprint Network calculates that we are using the Earth\u2019s renewable resources 1.7 times faster than they can be renewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to be fine even if we doubled the [population] size of the humans. I know a lot about environment stuff.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/technology\/elon-musk-names-humanitys-biggest-threat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 2022<\/a>) His current complacency about the environment is not consistent with any authoritative evaluation of our situation: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described our current status as <a href=\"https:\/\/unric.org\/en\/guterres-the-ipcc-report-is-a-code-red-for-humanity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201ccode red\u201d for humanity<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a [100%] chance of *all* species extinction due to expansion of the sun, unless humanity makes life multiplanetary.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1482552643343904770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jan 2022<\/a>) This is a rare example of Musk discussing threats to biodiversity. It is true, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/planet-earth\/when-will-earth-become-uninhabitable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scientists currently expect<\/a> that event to take place one billion years from now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Elon-Musk-award-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Elon Musk Award\" class=\"wp-image-4696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Elon-Musk-award-1.jpeg 1280w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Elon-Musk-award-1-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Elon-Musk-award-1-1024x682.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Elon-Musk-award-1-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Elon Musk Fake News Award<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As our director, Robin Maynard said when the report was launched:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt would be easy to laugh Elon Musk\u2019s extreme claims off, if he didn\u2019t have 100 million Twitter followers and a stratospheric media profile lending them spurious credibility. There\u2019s something really serious here too. The number of women with an unmet need for modern contraception in low-income countries stands at 270 million and is growing. Covid, climate change and the economic downturn all threaten to push back the vital gains in health, poverty reduction, family planning, gender equality and education that have addressed population growth and improved the lives of billions. And we\u2019re seeing hard-won reproductive freedoms from Iran to China to the US being pushed back, sometimes explicitly to promote higher birth rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe real challenge is to address the poverty, inequity, and lack of life opportunities that high fertility and population growth characterise, improve the wellbeing of the greatest proportion of our fellow citizens, and protect ecosystems here on Earth &#8211; before indulging the space fantasies of a handful of competing billionaires.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elon Musk has not so far responded to our report, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/climate-change\/news\/elon-musk-population-collapse-claims-b2120584.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enquiries from the media<\/a> arising from it. Although posted a few weeks ago, we\u2019ve also had no acknowledgement of the receipt of our award.
