Our growing population and rising consumption are putting the planet under pressure like never before. With wildlife species already going extinct, nature can\u2019t wait for us to take action. We are not separate from nature, we are part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Awakening<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theawakening.org.pk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Awakening <\/a>are an organisation that strives to empower vulnerable and disenfranchised women in rural areas of Pakistan by building feminist leadership, advances for women\u2019s human rights, advocate and mobilize for gender equality and social justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In northern Pakistan, the stunning Swat Valley is facing growing environmental pressure &#8211; from deforestation and waste dumping to the effects of climate change- all exacerbated by a growing population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theawakening.org.pk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Awakening<\/a> is working with girls, young people, and local communities to protect nature and promote environmental awareness through eco-literacy workshops, school-led river clean-ups, and reforestation campaigns.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2023, over 200 young people have joined their \u201cEmpowering Youth for Climate Justice\u201d clubs; planting trees, leading waste audits and going on clean up drives. Their trainings on menstrual waste and climate resilience have reached 500 girls and vastly reduced plastic usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Nature can&#8217;t wait, and neither can we&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Awakening<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some powerful words from their Director, Erfaan Hussein Babak, on the importance of youth engagement in protecting nature:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Words from The Awakening on World Population Day 2025\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jmokbC1Z5B8?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/populationmatters.org\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turimiquire Foundation &#8211; Sustainable agriculture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turimiquire.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Turimiquire Foundation<\/a> are a community-based organisation focused on family planning, rural education and agricultural development with communities in Sucre, Venezuela.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They follow a <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/04\/what-is-population-health-environment\/\">Population Health Environment (PHE)<\/a> model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1151\" height=\"1021\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/PHE-simple-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13816\" style=\"width:422px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/PHE-simple-1.png 1151w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/PHE-simple-1-300x266.png 300w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/PHE-simple-1-1024x908.png 1024w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/PHE-simple-1-768x681.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1151px) 100vw, 1151px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Their work has stopped destructive slash and burn practices to clear forest for farmland and instead worked with the local community to promote more sustainable agriculture practices such as agroforestry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turimiquire.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Turimiquire Foundation<\/a> recognises that the health of the people is just as important as the health of the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With their PHE model they promote environmental education and fulfil unmet need for family planning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch this video to find out more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Turimiquire Foundation - PHE in Action\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H1LwPVVzsco?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/populationmatters.org\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">KOMB GREEN &#8211; tree planting <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kombgreen\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Komb Green<\/a> volunteers have participated in the Nairobi River Regeneration, a project aimed to revitalized Nairobi&#8217;s rivers into vibrant waterfronts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project seeks to improve the quality of life for the residents by reclaiming the river as a shared public good, enhancing biodiversity and providing sustainable water resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kombgreen\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Komb Green<\/a> volunteers have removed trash polluting the local rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;ve also participated in growing seedlings to plant along the banks of Nairobi&#8217;s rivers. Tree planting helps to improve soil health and stability, turning river banks into thriving ecosystems that support a wealth of local species. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ghettoh clean <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100067750643319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ghettoh Clean<\/a> is a Youth Environmental Group based in the informal slum settlement of Kibera on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cGhettoh Clean Youth Group was founded in 2016, right after I finished high school in 2015. I couldn\u2019t manage to go to college or university since my parents couldn\u2019t afford to pay for my fees, I was frustrated since I couldn\u2019t imagine being idle as I knew its consequences having been brought up in the slum. I got passionate about trying to get a solution regarding the bad image of our environment. On a daily basis, I always woke up early in the morning with some of my friends and did some clean up in the small narrow river\u2026we realized that there was some change but still we were not satisfied with some of the residents who still lacked awareness. So I spent two months hustling for some money for an environmental campaign and also for purchasing the polythene bags which were used at that time. I initiated a garbage collection activity after holding the campaign in Kibra.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Brian&nbsp;Omariba, Founder of Ghettoh Clean Youth Group&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Their volunteers remove and recycle waste littering the streets and polluting the local rivers.
